August Challenges

August Challenges

Inspired by my new friend TheFireStarter, I’ve decided to take a crack at setting some monthly challenges which will all help towards achieving greater goals. There was a great TED Talk on the psychology of habits and how if you do someone for 30 days, it can easily become a habit which you continue forever. I’m normally pretty good with these as every year I complete the Dryathlon for Cancer Research UK as well as setting other challenges like running the local half marathon and giving up soft drinks for a year in the past.

So, challenges for the month of August are going to be:

– No takeaways for the month

A double reward for this one: Reduced spending and increased health! Also very simple to understand and measure success which is important when setting goals.

– Repair bicycle and go on weekly rides

I had a bike from back when I was 14 and used to cycle everywhere. It’s the reason I’ve never owned a car and saved a fortune in buses/taxis. Unfortunately since moving slightly further away from the town centre and purchasing a (cheap) motorbike, my bicycle has sat in the shed/garage. It needs punctures repaired, chain cleaning, brakes replaced and a good going over with WD40.

– No weekday boozing

I’m English, and so love a good few pints of lager. Eventually I want to setup some homebrew production in the garage but until then it’s still an added expense to the weekly shop. Therefore the challenge this month is to only drink at the weekends.

Im hoping that these challenges will form into habits which then produce a working bicycle for regular use and reduced alcohol spending/consumption.

  1. Solid goals. I love the idea of you getting your bike back up and running. A couple new tubes, some elbow grease and a good cleaning/lubrication and it will be ready to roll.

The combination of eating out less, riding your bike more and having a few less pints will certainly have healthy consequences. I love a good beer now and then, but don’t have one by myself.

I need to think of some challenges. I should sign up for a fall half marathon. It would get me running farther and would be a good way to zoom into fall.

  2. Hey ERG, biking is great, you’re going to really enjoy biking again. I started again 4yrs ago. I tried biking to work and found I just loved it. It combined my commute, exercise and saving money. Three for one! Now I bike year round, even in the winter.

    1. Thanks Thomas! I used to bike loads as well so hoping its still as much fun. I’ve already started work on the bike repairs so hopefully should have it ready for this weekend. Congratz on keeping it up even in the winter! Thats pretty badass!

  3. Great challenges. Biking will not only make you happier but will make your healthier too. Hopefully you can accomplish all these challenges. Good luck!

  4. Haha, nice challenges – good luck with them!

A few years back, I developed the habit of only drinking at weekends (Fridays and Saturdays, not Sundays!). I still stick by it and am a lot healthier (and have more money) as a result! Finishing work to get that cold beer on Friday is really worth all the abstinence during the week!

As for takeaways, I’ve not had a takeaway for over 2 months – just don’t tend to have them very often or feel tempted.

I too fancy setting up some homebrew production myself. Been reading up on it but not taken the plunge yet.

    1. I agree; There’s nothing better than to finish work on a Friday to a nice cold beer. Infact not having it during the week makes it taste even better!

I’ve got a few other projects to finish first (like fixing the bike) and then will begin on the homebrew. I’ll be sure to document my progress for you :)

  5. Homebrew is a good way to go, but be careful it can be a path to a whole new set of toys & desires.

A good place to get started is JimsBeerKit or the forum over at the craft brewers association. Don’t look at the stainless steel all grain kit though, it is very shiny, and before long you too could be after some …. Oh and some kegs, a beer engine, etc etc
